The St. Louis area enjoys four distinct seasons comprised of warm summers, cool autumns, brisk winters and delightful springs. You are assured four full and beautiful seasons with all the varied activities possible at different times of the year.
The warm summer skies are bright and blue with minimal rainfall, however, July and August can be the most challenging months of the year when the heat and humidity set in. Temperatures average 85-90F during the summer months with temperatures over 90F occurring around 35 days per year and over 100F occurring no more than 5 days per year. Even at that, it seems like there are always several breaks in the weather that help us make it through to September. Summer is a wonderful time to walk around St. Louis’ famous restored downtown area that offers blocks of scenic and pleasant outdoor strolling. Enjoy the statues, flowers and fountains!
By mid to late September things start to cool down which makes for a spectacular autumn with the trees turning to brilliant shades of red, auburn, yellow and gold. Autumn is the driest, least humid time of year. Activities this time of year include observing the Eagles at the river cliffs. Be sure to take along a sweater or jacket for the crisp fall nights.
Winters in St. Louis are slow in starting with minimal snowfall until late December and then more into January and February. Average snowfall is 19.8” per year. Winter temperatures range from below 0F to 55F with temperatures below 32F occurring less than 25 days per year and below 0F occurring on average 2-3 days per year. St. Louis does have its share of ice storms but the best part of winter is that nothing ever lasts too long here. Within a couple of days, there will be a warming trend and all the ice and snow will melt away. Our winters offer a variety of weather that occasionally includes making snowmen—not TOO often—just often enough to delight in a white wonderland.
By the time March rolls around you start to notice signs of spring. While an occasional snowfall may occur it melts quickly. April, May and June progressively get warmer which is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities. While spring temperatures are comfortable, it can be rainy, with some severe thunderstorms. This is the time the region’s array of colorful blossoms brighten every corner.
Overall, St. Louis has very enjoyable weather. It is, however, very changeable weather making it hard to predict. So don’t put too much faith in 5-day forecasts and be prepared for anything. St. Louisans often say “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes, it’ll change.”
